Edinburgh Castle - situated dramatically on an ancient volcanic rock high above the city, Edinburgh Castle is one of the most iconic and visited historic sites in the UK. The castle has played a central role in Scottish history for centuries, as a royal residence, military fortress, prison and enduring symbol of national identity.
Within its ancient walls you'll find the Scottish Crown Jewels, alongside the Stone of Destiny, upon which Scottish and British monarchs have been crowned for centuries. The castle is also home to the National War Museum, as well as offering breathtaking views across the city and the Firth of Forth beyond. At one o'clock every day, the famous One O'Clock Gun fires across the city, a tradition dating back to 1861.
